this thing was made by the guy in the shorts. He made each part by hand. Each part was shipped to him one part at a time from a museum car in Germany. He made a mold and shipped the part back. repeat repeat repeat. Estimated value was well over $1m.

Not that I mind, but I don’t think the Ford Popular is supposed to be in the post. Funny note, though - I recognized one exactly like that in the Great Escape on TV last weekend, pretending to be an Opel staff car.

It was, I had like 4 or 5 other pictures but for some reason they have disappeared from my phone. It included a Gen1 El Camino, AMX and a Cobra replica.

I wonder how Mercedes-Benz feels about that, or were they the ones sending him parts to model?

At one time Mercedes allegedly had a master on file for every part on every car they had made even close to recently. Probably didn’t include the SSK. Probably.

They still do, though I remember hearing that there are holes in the files because of some, um, record keeping issues in the early 40's. But I think they have filled the gaps by tracking down known correct cars and cataloging them. Mercedes-Benz Classic can provide anything, and the Classic EPC is invaluable. I was looking up trim parts for a European-market ‘66 250SL by the VIN a couple of months ago, no problem. We did a mechanical restoration of a ‘53 300d Cabriolet that had been sitting for decades, and MBC didn’t blink at anything. They’re certainly the only European automaker that operates at that level.

Rolls Royce might have one covered to a similar extent. Might. Then again, they’re English, so they might be a bit less well organized - not to mention some awkward bankruptcies/reorganizations and things. The 1953 headlight switches might be in a safety deposit box in Swindon or something.
